Levi’s Chief Executive Officer Chip Bergh has stepped down, passing the leadership torch to Michelle Gass, the former CEO of Kohl’s. In preparation for Bergh's retirement, the board of directors had previously elected Gass, who was then serving as the company's president, to succeed Bergh in both roles as President and Chief Executive Officer.
Michelle Gass has been the long-anointed successor and was instrumental in overseeing Levi’s brand, including its product, merchandising, and marketing, and managing the company’s digital and global commercial operations. Under her leadership, Levi’s has prioritized international expansion solidified its position as a full denim lifestyle apparel brand and shifted the company towards a direct-to-consumer (DTC) operating model.
Gass has over 30 years of experience in retail and consumer goods. Before being the CEO of Levi’s, she worked as the CEO of Kohl's. During her tenure at Kohl's, she led the company's transformation into a prominent multi-channel retailer and established key national brand partnerships, notably with Sephora. Michelle Gass significantly boosted digital capabilities, increasing the e-commerce business to USD 6 billion annually and enhancing the loyalty program. She held leadership positions at Starbucks for 16 years, ultimately becoming President, of Starbucks EMEA.
Michelle Gass has been recognized in Fortune's Most Powerful Women in Business and Businessperson of the Year lists and currently serves on the boards of PepsiCo, the Retail Industry Leaders Association, and the National Retail Federation
