Samsung Group, the leading South Korean conglomerate, has announced a major shift in its work policy by enforcing a mandatory six-day workweek for its executives. This decision comes in response to the economic challenges the company is currently facing.
Despite the global shift towards four-day workweeks, the USD 374 billion tech giant’s 6-day workweek strategy reflects its efforts to maintain a competitive edge in the market. This decision reflects Samsung's efforts to adapt to current economic difficulties while maintaining its competitive edge. A senior executive explained that the move was influenced by the underperformance of key units in the previous year. By enforcing this rigorous schedule, Samsung aims to instill a sense of urgency among its executives, encouraging them to collaboratively navigate through rising oil prices, increased borrowing costs, and the devaluation of the South Korean won.
This new work schedule will initially apply to most of Samsung's technology divisions, with plans to extend it to the financial services sector shortly. Although some executives have been voluntarily working six days a week since the beginning of the year, this policy now mandates the extended workweek for a broader group of executives.
This decision by Samsung comes at a time when there is growing interest in remote work options. A study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group last year revealed a significant difference in revenue growth between companies embracing remote work and those mandating in-office attendance. Businesses offering remote work options experienced a fourfold increase in revenue growth compared to those requiring office presence. Companies that provided full flexibility in employee work locations saw a substantial 21 percent surge in sales between 2020 and 2022, after adjusting for industry-specific trends. It remains to be seen how this change will impact on the company's performance and employee satisfaction in the long run.
