Women have accused the Walt Disney Company of gender discrimination in a class-action pay gap case. The lawsuit alleges that divisions across Disney mistreat women by giving them lower salaries than male colleagues doing equivalent work and by denying them promotions. On Wednesday, four more women came forward and filed a complaint against the company.
General Motors Co. has cut off health care coverage for its striking members. In turn, the United Auto Workers is providing union-funded cover COBRA option to workers, the union’s website says. The union’s attorneys are checking if GM is allowed to end medical coverage immediately, said Terry Dittes, Vice President of the union. GM’s action “will be reviewed…”, Dittes wrote.

The agency has urged the company and complainants to come to a resolution after concluding there was gender discrimination. On Thursday, staffing company Randstad said that it will fill more than 17,000 positions nationwide for the upcoming holiday season. A new survey conducted by data and analytics firm Qlik found that companies are accepting job seeker’s practical data experience instead of data science degrees. Skills tests or previous job experience is a key metric to judge a job seekers’ data literacy for 60 percent of people, while 18 percent of people consider a college degree in STEM or data science as a major qualification.

On Sunday, midnight, the United Auto Workers (UAW) went on a strike following the U.S labor contract talks with the GM, Reuters reported. “This is our last resort”, Terry Dittes, the UAW vice president, said at a news conference. GM had offered more than $7 billion in new investments, $5,400 jobs, and a contract-ratification bonus of $8000 to workers, Reuters further reported.
Film data mined from several sources, including the IMDB and Box Office Mojo, and other websites which track box office revenues and break the latest film news, showed that female Hollywood actors were paid 56 percent less than their male counterparts, which is equivalent to $2.2 million less per film. Historically, female actors have been paid less than male actors.

Employers must designate unpaid FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) protected time offs, according to a new ruling. Neither employer nor employee can decline FMLA protected leaves, in the event an eligible employee needs leaves, the DOL said. Paid time-off can run concurrently with unpaid leaves. Eligible employees can use FMLA leaves for childcare, foster care or elderly care.
Assembly bill 5, which reclassifies independent contractors as employees, was approved by the California State Senate. The bill requires the State Assembly approval and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s signature before it becomes a law. The New York Times says the State Assembly vote is a mere formality and Newsom is expected to sign the bill into law as he endorsed it.
Amazon is planning to hire 30,000 full and part-time workers on Amazon Career Day on Sept. 17. The company will hold six career day events across the U.S from its second North American headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, Dallas and Nashville, Tennessee, a press statement said. Further, Amazon will invest in USD 700 million in training the recruited workers.

Wendy’s announced to launch a breakfast service at all of its locations in 2020. To drive this initiative, the company is looking to add 20,000 new employees in the coming months. UPS, the delivery giant, announced to hire 100,000 people for seasonal jobs for the approaching holiday season. British Airways has canceled flights for the next two days as its pilots went on strike over pay disputes. This halt could cost the company USD98 million. In an email, the company announced to cancel almost 100 percent of services as it had “no option”. Fortune reported, “the pilots had been offered a deal that would have lifted remuneration 11.5% to 202,000 pounds…”.
